4th Year Students Win for Attempting the IBM Watson Challenge

Bachelor of Business Information Technology (BBIT) student’s Mordecai Nuni and Sidney Kairu proudly won the IBM Watson Challenge, while attending their annual academic trip to Europe, where they visited; IBM Research Centre and ETH in Zurich, Saarland University in Germany, and France.

Watson is an IBM supercomputer that combines artificial intelligence (AI) and sophisticated analytical software for optimal performance as a “question answering” machine. The supercomputer is named after IBM's founder, Thomas J. Watson.

The duo participated in a game played by Watson, and attempted to answer some questions right.

When at the IBM centre, a lady played a video where Watson played a game against some smart humans (Brad and Ken) during a jeopardy competition in 2011; Watson defeated the jeopardy game champions. The lady challenged us to participate if we knew the answers. We attempted to answer the questions right as the game went on and we were recognized. Generally people never bother to answer, so it was great that we did.

Mordecai and Sidney won cook books Cognitive Cooking with Chef Watson; Recipes for innovation from IBM. The cook book is a show of how man and machine can come together for creative collaboration; combining the creativity of ICE chefs and the cognitive abilities of Watson to come up with new and creative recipes that will change how professionals and home cooks create dishes.

Congratulations to the winners.
